St. John is small, a little over a square mile. It is wedged between Overland, St. Ann and Breckenridge Hills, and easy to miss on a map unless you live there. It shares the Ritenour School District with its neighbors. Much of its daily traffic runs along St. Charles Rock Road. What it does not have is any real same-day medical care of its own. So for a city this compact, the nearest good option is in effect the neighborhood clinic. At under two miles, that is us.
What we treat
We handle everything that needs attention today but is not an emergency. On the sick side: colds and influenza, sore throat and strep, and ear and sinus infections. Also bronchitis and persistent cough, fever, and stomach upset and dehydration. Also urinary symptoms, rashes and allergic reactions, and asthma flare-ups. On the injury side: sprains and strains, suspected fractures, dislocations, and cuts needing closure. Also minor burns, abrasions, animal bites and insect stings, sports injuries and head injuries. Then there are physicals, vaccinations, confidential STI testing, occupational medicine and an on-site infusion suite.
Diagnostics in the same building
Ask why most urgent care visits turn into two appointments. The answer is that the clinic cannot run the test. We can. Digital X-ray is on site. It is read during your visit, so a suspected fracture is confirmed or ruled out before you leave. Splinting or bracing is handled the same day. Our laboratory handles strep, influenza, COVID-19, mononucleosis, urinalysis, pregnancy testing and blood panels. Most results return inside the visit. The rest return within a few days. When a case needs ultrasound or CT, those are available too.
How do I get to urgent care from St. John?
From anywhere in St. John, the drive is four minutes or so. Take St. Charles Rock Road east, then cross to Woodson Road. From the Overland side of the city, you can simply take Woodson the whole way. Free parking sits right outside the entrance. Because the trip is so short, it is worth coming in for things you might otherwise sit on. Think of a cut that may need closing, a cough that has changed character, or an ankle that is not improving.
When should you go to the emergency room instead of urgent care?
The distinction matters. We are an urgent care center, not an emergency department. Call 911 or go to an emergency room for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe or uncontrolled bleeding, a serious head injury with loss of consciousness or worsening symptoms, severe abdominal pain, a major burn, a severe allergic reaction, pregnancy complications, or any injury involving exposed bone. What happens at a walk-in urgent care visit?
No appointment is needed. Register at the front desk when you arrive. Bring your photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and a list of the medicines you take. A parent or guardian needs to be there to sign for a child. You are triaged by arrival order, adjusted for how sick people are. So a chest complaint will move ahead of a form that needs signing. A clinician takes your history, examines you, and orders whatever testing the problem calls for. The laboratory and the X-ray suite are in the building. Because of that, testing generally happens while you wait, instead of becoming a second appointment. You leave with a treatment plan and, where one can be made, a diagnosis. Any prescription is sent to your pharmacy. You also leave with written instructions and a clear statement of what should bring you back. Insurance, records and follow-up
We accept most major insurance plans and also see self-pay patients. Bring any coverage you have. The front desk will tell you where you stand before anything is done. To get the cost in writing beforehand, you can request a Good Faith Estimate. We are not trying to replace your regular doctor. For patients who have one, we send a summary of the visit. So your own physician knows what happened and what was prescribed. Where you do not, we will tell you honestly whether you need ongoing care for this. We will help you find it. If the problem turns out to fall outside urgent care, we say so. Then we point you to the right place, rather than treating around the edges of it. There is no charge for language assistance. The clinic is wheelchair accessible throughout.

Which school district physicals can you complete?
Any of them. We complete Ritenour forms and every other school, camp, college and sports physical form. Each one is a walk-in visit, signed before you leave. Bring the paperwork you were given.
How long will I be there?
That depends on the day. Patients are seen in the order they arrive, adjusted for how sick people are. The laboratory and X-ray are in the building. Can you refill a prescription I have run out of?
For short-term and acute medications, often yes, as part of an urgent care visit. We are not a substitute for your prescriber on long-term medication. We do not manage ongoing controlled-substance prescriptions.
